It’s not every day in Kent that a festival with acts who would usually play festivals such as Glastonbury comes to town. Exclusively for Choon online I went to report the final day of the festival.
Arriving at the site I had found two days of what, in my opinion, was mayhem: no shows, health and safety problems, no water taps, disgusting toilet facilities and massive scale disorganisation.
Talking to friends and people around the ZOO8 site, most felt that despite all the mishaps and disappointment over the Friday and Saturday, they had had a lot of fun
especially with the great sets from Mark Ronson, The Cribs, Hadouken and Lethal Bizzle along with great DJs playing well into the night.
However, after going through to the press area backstage there was a much different story about how enjoyable the festival was. After nearly being thrown out of the press area by security twice because something was going on I heard that the catering didn’t get paid, the security had to get paid before the bands did. Rumors were circulating that Mark Ronson told the organizers that he would not go on unless he saw the cash. Apparently the organisers had to go around to all the bars and food facilities to pay the producer/artist £15,000 in five, tens and pound coins and notes. Interviwed for the Kent Messenger Dabby Blanche co-organizer of ZOO8 wrote this: “Our biggest problem was one of miscalculation over cash flow. This required us to cancel a few acts”. “With assistance from Port Lympne we managed to keep the show on the road with most of the popular acts appearing.”
